The route from your drop-off point to your first high-altitude camp, Shira 1 features a small gain in altitude and is not very challenging physically. Due to this, you will be able to begin the process of acclimatization properly. By the time you reach the camp, our professional mountain crew will have already prepared everything necessary, put up the tents, and begun preparing dinner.

This will be your first day at this altitude, so it is strongly recommended you heed the following instructions from this point on:

    • Abstain from consuming alcohol and caffeine
    • Drink over 4 liters of bottled water daily (little by little, frequently)
    • Take a Diamox pill to help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Most mountain climbers take Diamox in the morning, before they start their ascent, in order to reduce discomfort associated with altitude sickness. We recommend you consult your doctor prior to the trip to discuss potential allergies.

At night you may experience discomfort associated with acclimatization to the high altitude: because of a reduction in your breathing pattern at night, your body gets less oxygen than during the day. Taking altitude into account, you may therefore start feeling sick and experience a headache. Pay attention to your own body and tell your guide if you start feeling any symptoms of altitude sickness.

The main feature dominating the Amboseli plains is the Mount Kilimanjaro. With its peak at 5895m above sea level, it is the highest mountain in Africa. On a clear sky and often in the morning, visitors are rewarded with magnificent views of its snow-capped summits. Amboseli is a good birding destination and more than 420 species have been recorded here. The swamps are great for water-associated birds such as egrets, herons, pelicans, and crowned cranes. Large numbers of flamingos may be present in the wet seasons (March to May and October to December). The grassland areas offer some interesting ground birds such as Hartlaub’s bustard and the localized Pangani longclaw. The acacia woodland holds some dry country specials such as steel-blue whydah, white-bellied go-away bird and the Von der Decken’s hornbill. The migratory bird population fills the park from November to April.

The reserve is located between the Great Rift Valley and Lake Victoria in primarily open grassland. The swampy land provides more access to water and less access to tourists. The eastern end is closest to Nairobi and hence easier to access by tourists. The Masai Mara is regarded as the jewel of Kenya’s wildlife viewing areas. There have been some 95 species of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles and over 400 bird species recorded on the reserve. Nowhere in Africa is wildlife more abundant, and it is for this reason a visitor hardly misses to see the big five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhino).
