In Kumano, Japan, an ancient path paved with mossy stone steps in the midst of greenery encircles the three mountains of Kumano, which has been a spiritual pilgrimage path for the ancients since the Heian Period. With historical monuments and steles and nature's bounty of hot springs and waterfalls, it has a unique network of pilgrimage paths intertwined with ancient paths leading to various important Buddhist shrines, covering the southern area of the Kii Peninsula and the southern part of Osaka. The scenery along the way is picturesque with green hills and green water. In its heyday, the Kumano Kodo stretched for more than 400 kilometers, but now only a few dozen kilometers remain. In order to preserve this World Heritage site, a group of volunteers have long been active along the Kumano Kodo, and our children will join them in their efforts to continue the life of this monument. By hiking the trail, the children will find a sense of sacred ritual in the quiet of the mountains, and at the same time participate in the maintenance of the trail, making the trip to Kumano even more meaningful.
