Named the Green Island, São Miguel has the largest lagoons of the Azores, located at the
bottom of volcanic calderas of kilometric dimensions. The most emblematic is Sete Cidades, a
place of legends and myths, located to the west of the island, the volcanic caldera has a
diameter of 5 kilometers, and its interior is formed by 5 craters and three lagoons. After
leaving the vehicle in the parking lot of Lagoa do Canário we will take a short walk that will
take us up the mountain to the edge of the caldera and the viewpoint of Boca do Inferno,
surely the best viewpoint of Sete Ciudades and one of the most spectacular of all the Azores.
Return to the Lagoa do Canario where we will take the path that leads into the mountains of
the Serra Devassa. Our walking tour, about 5 km long, will take us to discover the area with
the highest concentration of lagoons in the whole island. On the way we will pass by the
Lagoons of Eugas, Rasa, Carvao and Empanadas, between bushes and low forest. Return in a
circular itinerary to the parking lot of Lagoa do Canário. Then we will make a stop at the Vista
do Rei Viewpoint before going down to the bottom of the crater and visit the town of Sete
AZORES
Cidades. We will end the day on the west coast, where we can discover the beautiful cliffs
and islets of Mosteiros and explore the stone beaches in Ferraria. Night in hotel.

In the morning we will go to Ribeira Grande, where our panoramic tour of the north coast of
the island begins. The first stop will be in the tea fields of Gorreana, the largest on the island.
We are going to take a short walk between the stepped terraces to see the tea crops and we
can also taste one of the varieties of tea grown on the island. Then we will continue along the
coast of Achada to the town of Nordeste. Panorama of the cliffs and the lighthouse of Arnel.
Afterwards we will follow the coast line, stopping at the viewpoints of Ponta do Sossego and
Ponta da Madrugada. Arrival at midday to Faial da Terra. Here we will make the nice circular
walk crossing the course of the Faial da Terra valley to the Cascada do Prego and returning
through the restored village of Sanguinho. Distance: 6 km, Time: 2h30.
In the afternoon we will move to Furnas. The Furnas volcano and its lagoon occupies a
privileged position within the island and is notable for its extension, surrounded by exuberant
vegetation, which is called Formoso vale (beautiful valley). Visit the Furnas geothermal field,
with its fumaroles and boiling mud pits. Rest of the afternoon to enjoy the surroundings or
make the optional visit to the Terra Nostra Park (possibility to bath in the large hot pool and
visit the Botanical Garden). In the evening return to our hotel.

The first part of the day will be dedicated to a pleasant walk, called Ruta del Agua (“Water
Trail”), of about 8 km distance. We will depart from the village of Remédios, in the
municipality of Lagoa. The first part of the trail runs through agricultural fields and farms until
reaching an old tunnel of 50 m and a series of aqueducts that formerly supplied the Lagoa
alcohol factory. In this way and after continuing through a dense forest we will arrive at the
rocky amphitheater where we will see the Janela do Inferno (Window of Hell), a natural hole
from which a beautiful waterfall drops. The return will be made along the opposite bank of
the ravine, crossing a couple of tunnels, then along the slopes of Pico da Cova (449 m) and
through fields back to Remédios.
In the afternoon we will take the scenic road from Lagoa up to the caldera of Fogo
(viewpoints on the road) to descend the northern slope to the Caldeira Velha Canyon. Rest of
the afternoon to enjoy the different natural pools in spectacular natural surroundings.

Transfer to the Ponta Delgada airport. At 8:30 AM departure of the flight to the Island of Pico
(1h flight). After arrival to the island we will start our tour driving the west and south coast.
First stop in Areira Larga and Criaçao Velha vineyards, declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
The cultivation of these lands date back to the first settlers of the island, during the 15th
century. After driving the south coast passing near the south slopes of Pico volcano, we will
explore the Mistérios, black lava fields formed in the last eruptions of the volcano. We will
make a short walk through the surroundings before arriving to Lajes do Pico. Here we’ll
embark on an unforgettable adventure. The island of Pico is one of the best places in the
world for whale watching. The cetaceans are attracted by the currents that flow around the
island, mainly due to the outcrop of food along the limit of the continental shelf. In recent
years, 25 species have been identified in the Azores or almost 25% of the species known
throughout the world. Species such as the blue whale, the rorcual common, the northern
rorcual or Yubarta, the pilot whale and the sperm whale, visit the island frequently. Also
some species of dolphins and killer whales. The duration of the navigation is approximately 3
hours (from 13:00 to 16:00). At noon free time in Lajes do Pico. Night in hotel.

We are facing one of the most exciting days of the trip, the ascent to the summit of Pico, the
highest mountain of the Azores and roof of Portugal. Very soon, before sunrise we will leave
towards the access control of Casa de la Montanha (1,200 meters). The ascent and descent
takes around 7-8 h, through steep terrain and constant climb until reaching the summit
crater. Here we will find the final climb of 70 m to the Piquinho, small volcanic cone that leads
to the highest point. Panoramic view at 360º. If the day is clear we will see clearly the islands
of Faial and São Jorge, and also in the distance the island of Terceira. Descent the same
itinerary. Free afternoon for rest.

Very early in the morning, we will travel to Puerto de Madalena, on the west coast of the
island. Boarding at 8:15 AM on the ferry that will take us to the neighbor island of Faial (45
min). Then we will take the vehicle and drive to the edge of the Caldeira de Faial, a crater of
2 km of diameter that was formed around 400,000 years ago. Hike circumambulating the
crater. In the afternoon we will go to the interesting geological area of the Capelinhos and
enjoying a walk in Horta, one of the cities with more history and charm of the Azores.
