湿地，仅占地球表面6％，却为地球上20％的已知物种提供生生不息的生存和发展环境，被誉为“物种基因库”和“地球之肾”。黄海湿地，江苏首项世界自然遗产，全球第2块潮间带湿地遗产，符合世界自然遗产生物多样性标准。每年有20万到30万只越冬候鸟在这里栖息，东亚-澳大利西亚候鸟迁徙路线还有300多万只迁徙停歇的鸻鹬类候鸟，其中32种鸟类被列入世界自然保护联盟的濒危物种红皮书。
